(Town & Village)

The Town of Groton is nestled in the northeast corner of

Tompkins County, deep in the heart of the Finger Lakes

Region of New York State.  Our 50-square mile radius

encompasses the Village of Groton and the Hamlets of

McLean, West Groton, Peruville and Groton City. Entering Groton from any direction you are met with a view of lush, rolling hills, open spaces, productive farms and attractive homes.  Traveling the well maintained country roads you will discover places of worship, restaurants, bed and breakfasts, unique businesses and welcoming neighborhoods.

Groton was created in 1817 when the Town of Locke was divided, with the northern half retaining the name of Locke and the southern half named Division.  Division was later changed to Groton by the many settlers who came here from New England.  Groton’s past remains alive in its unique architecture, historic buildings and stately homes.  Main Street, in the Village of Groton,  has maintained its Victorian flavor and has many stores, small shops and restaurants to serve the local inhabitants or to a welcome an out-of-towner looking for a place to spend an enjoyable day.

The Owasco Inlet and Fall Creek are sources of beauty and favored destinations for fishermen.  Stonehedeges Golf Course provides an excellent golfing experience and a relaxing place to meet with friends.  Sports enthusiasts also enjoy the Groton Rod and Gun Club, the Tri-County Horseshoe Club and the Cortland Microd Association.

Since 1888 the Village of Groton has maintained and expanded its water system and has received a sizeable grant for updated filtration.  It also boasts its own electric company which provides low-cost electric to all Village residents.  The Groton Fire Department remains one of the few all-volunteer fire departments in the area providing fire and ambulance services to the Village of Groton and most of the surrounding Town, the southeastern section of the Town being served by the McLean Fire Department.

The Groton Library is exceptional with its vast number of books, a large collection of videos, computers, connections to the Finger Lakes Library System and many children’s programs. Groton School is recognized as one of the best in the region with a majority of graduates going on to college.  The athletic fields are always in use by children of all ages.

Besides the school athletic fields there’s the Memorial Park and Pool and the South Sports Complex with its skateboard park and tennis courts.  The Town and Village Recreation Committee organizes year-round sports, classes and events for people of all ages as well as summer concerts at the gazebo on Conger Boulevard and Winterfest.  Community events abound such as the Art & Wellness Walk, the Multi-County Softball Tournament, Groton Olde Home Days, the Annual Labor Day 5K Race and 1-Mile Run, Groton Pizza Fun Day, Antique Apples and Art, and various celebrations for  Easter, Halloween and Christmas.

Over the years Groton has become the crossroads of three counties and a hub from which one can easily reach many destinations.  New homes are being built on a regular basis and small businesses continue to spring up, employing our local people and contributing to the rich diversity of our community.  Groton is a great place in which to live, work, go to school, worship and be a part of community.  Come and visit….you just might decide to stay a lifetime.
